MADINA, April 9, GNA - Eight wooden stores were on Sunday morning destroyed by a fire-outbreak at the Ashalley-botwe Lorry Station near the Madina Divisional Police Headquarter.

It took firemen almost an hour to bring the fire under control. The items destroyed in the eight stores included, bottles of liquor, soft drinks refrigerators and clothing. Standing fans, swivel chairs in a barbering shop, large quantities of cassettes, telephones in a communication shop and a hairdressing shop.

In an interview with the GNA, a Taxi Diver at the station, Mr. Simon Awua, said as early as 0845 hours on Sunday, he saw a thick smock from underneath the door of a drinking bar, later followed by a loud explosion accompanied with fire. He quickly alerted some women who were sitting around the area and they tried breaking into the store to evacuate the burning items but to no avail.

A report was quickly made at the Madina Divisional Police Headquarters for the attention of the Ghana National Fire Service, who, with the assistance of other fire-fighting agencies, managed to put the fire out-break under control.
