Fire Officer calls for more safety education

Kumasi, Aug. 12, GNA - Mr Philip Aheng-Mensah, Ashanti Regional Fire Officer, has underlined the need for intensification of fire safety education to bring down the incidence of fire outbreaks.

He said it was important to assist people to adopt fire prevention measures.

Mr Aheng-Mensah was interacting with personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) during a tour of some fire stations in the Region to familiarize himself with their operational challenges.

The stations included those at Nkenkasu, Obuasi, Ejura, Fomena, Kuntenase, New-Edubiase, Offinso, Mampong, Ejisu and Konongo.

The lack of adequate fire tenders was identified as the major handicap of many of the stations and he promised that everything would be done to address that.

He asked the fire officers to liaise with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies to ensure that there were sufficient water hydrants to aid their operations during emergencies.

Mr Aheng-Mensah said the problem of inadequate personnel at some of the fire stations would be tackled as well.

He called on the personnel to show more commitment to the job and to discharge their duties efficiently to raise the image of the GNFS.

He also asked them to lead decent and disciplined lives by avoiding drunkenness and other socially reprehensible lifestyles.
