The fire reportedly started from a shop dealing in the sale of matches
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has contained a fire outbreak at the Kumasi Kejetia Market, preventing what could have been a major disaster and saving goods worth hundreds of Ghana cedis.
The fire, which reportedly started from a shop dealing in the sale of matches, was swiftly brought under control by fire officers stationed at the market.
The cause of the fire, which occurred on Monday, April 20, 2026, is currently unknown. However, the affected shop suffered the loss of goods valued at several hundred cedis.
Speaking to OTEC News reporter Kwame Agyenim Boateng, the Acting Managing Director of Kumasi City Market Limited, Ernest Afayam, confirmed that only one shop was affected.
“We are fortunate the fire service personnel stationed here in the market responded to the fire quickly and this prevented the inferno from spreading,” he said.
He added that management will continue to monitor traders to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations within the facility.
The President of the Federation of Kumasi Traders, Nana Kwasi Prempeh, also commended the GNFS for its swift response and urged traders to remain vigilant in their operations to prevent future incidents.
Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service has begun investigations to determine the exact cause of the fire.
