The timely intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service on Wednesday prevented the Registrar General’s Department from being razed down by fire.
An eye witness told the Ghana News Agency that due to the energy problems, the Department had been forced to depend on generator power for the past two weeks.
The source said “we suspect that the intermittent switch over of power might have caused an electrical friction which triggered the fire.”
A Fire Officer from the National Fire Service told the GNA at the scene that they are conducting a fire audit to ascertain the cause of the outbreak.
The GNA observed panic stricken faces of staff and clients moving away steadily whilst fire service officials took over portions of the building to assess the risk.
Work has however resumed after fire officials gave the all clear.
The Registrar General's Department was established under an Ordinance in 1950 during the Colonial days.
It became a department of the Ministry of Justice in 1961.
It is mandated by law to ensure an efficient and effective administration of entities, inter – alia, the registration of businesses, industrial property, marriages, administration of estates, and public trustees and provide data for national planning.
