Kukuom (B/A) Jan. 28, GNA - A six-bedroom house and two attached kitchens belonging to Madam Adwoa Badu, a cocoa farmer was last week razed by fire at Kukuom in the Asunafo District in Brong Ahafo. Personal effects worth hundreds of millions of cedis were destroyed in the fire, whose cause is yet to be known.
Some of the items destroyed were television sets, fridges, furniture, mattresses and 19 million cedis cash.
Madam Badu, landlady, told Ghana News Agency that her daughter, Selina Achaa early that morning detected a thick smoke coming out of the room of Mr. Oteng, one of two teachers resident in the house. She said though the daughter raised the alarm, which drew many people to the scene they could not put the fire off due to its intensity.
Madam Badu said she lost seven million cedis, being proceeds from the sale of her cocoa as well as her daughter's 12 million cedis to the fire.
An eye-witness later told the GNA that attempts to get Fire Service personnel proved futile as the district did not have a fire tender. He said by the time the fire tender in the Asutifi District was brought, the house was razed.
Meanwhile a delegation comprising the Asunafo District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr George Yaw Boakye, District NADMO Coordinator, Alhaji Ishak Bonsu, and personnel from the Fire Service have visited the victims to console them and pledged support for their rehabilitation. The NADMO Coordinator advised landlords to engage the services of qualified electricians to install their electrical fittings and warned against illegal connections.
