A raging fire at the weekend destroyed properties worth millions of Ghana Cedis at the Sunyani mechnics enclave popularly called ‘Magazine’.
Eight stalls and shops, as well as containers stocked with spare parts, electrical and car batteries, belonging to the mechanics, as well as a saloon car, all got burnt.
A tipper truck and a number of vehicles undergoing maintenance works at the garage got partially burnt in the incident, which did not record any casualty.
The cause of the fire, which was said to have started around 0100 hours on Saturday, is yet to be known but residents suspected an electrical fault as the area experienced power outages the night before the incident.
Divisional Officer Grade III Francis Gaisie, acting Sunyani Municipal Fire Officer, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani on Wednesday and said eight mechanics lost their properties to the fire.
He said on receiving a distress call from a resident around 1245 hours on Saturday, the service quickly dispatched personnel on stand-by to the scene.
DOIII Gaisie said although, the service sent three fire tenders including one from Berekum due to the intensity of the fire , it still took the fire fighters time and wit to bring the fire under control.
