Five schools in Jomoro District score zero percent in BECE

Half Assini (W/R), Nov. 6, GNA - Five schools scored zero per cent in the 2009/10 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Jomoro District of the Western Region. This indicates that no candidate from these schools; Mangyia and Anlomatuape District Assembly JSS, Edobo-Atwebanso Catholic JSS and Amokwasuazo and Cocoa Town JSS scored between aggregates six and 36 to qualify for admission into Senior Secondary/Technical schools. Mr Bartholomew Ofori, Jomoro District Director of Education, made this known in his report at the last meeting of the Jomoro District Assembly at Half Assini.

He said the district had the worse result in the Western Region in the BECE last year and appealed to the assembly and stakeholders in education to help reverse the situation. According to him, only 40 percent of the 61 schools that took part in the examination had placement. Mr Ofori attributed the poor performance of the schools to lack of proper supervision of teachers and corruption by some staff at the District Education Office.

He said information reaching him indicated that some fresh teachers were charged between 100 Ghana cedis and 500 Ghana cedis by some staff at the office before they are appointed. "This makes it impossible for the supervisors to control or query such teachers when they go wrong," he said. Mr Ofori said he had instituted some stringent measures to deal with such supervisors and appealed to politicians in the area to support him to achieve his objectives.

Mr Ofori said he had been able to delete 30 ghost names from vouchers of the directorate and had again detected 60 more. He said he had decided to change the supervisors and assigned new ones as part of efforts to arrest the situation. He said Twenene District Assembly JHS was the best public school while Nzemaman Complex emerged the overall best school in the district in BECE examination.
