Fix Volta roads or we march – Group to government

A group calling itself Fix Abandoned Volta Roads Campaign made up of the youth within and outside the Volta Region, has threatened to demonstrate against the government if contractors working on various road projects in the region do not resume work by 15 September 2019.

This was disclosed in a statement released by the group on Tuesday, 3 September.

According to the group, the general public is fed up with the “lip service being paid by the government to the abandoned roads in the region.”

The group also stated that the deteriorating roads have become “nauseating” to people in the region because “the more the road projects delay, the more the cost increases and the more the abandoned roads further deteriorate, all at the expense of the taxpayer”.

The group further continued that as citizens of Ghana, its members would “no longer allow politicians to take us for a ride”, adding: “Governance is continuous irrespective of which government is in power, national resources must be put to judicious and efficient use; moreso, projects started by previous governments needed to be continued by successive governments.”

The group also noted that demonstrations against government are not new to its members, recalling that it has organised previous demonstrations over the poor state of the roads in the region under various banner names in 2014 and in August 2016. It also noted that it has an “indomitable will to succeed”, since its “cause is for the larger good.”

It recalled how the Energy Minister, Mr Peter Amewu, who used to be the Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), “supported our collective cause, making sure roads are fixed in the Volta Region, especially the eastern corridor roads. It is, therefore, surprising how Hon. Peter Amewu lost steam over this commitment when the NPP government took over power. Clearly, depicting the fact that the Ghanaian politician is only interested in their parochial interest rather than the collective communal good.”
