Flood victims in Mfantseman get relief items

Saltpond (CR), July 14, GNA- Flood victims in the Mfantseman District of the Central Region have been supplied with relief items worth over 400 million cedis.

The Mfantseman District assembly, Mr Stephen Asamoah Boateng, MP for Mfantseman West and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), provided the items.

The items were 1,650 bags of cement, 75 packets of roofing sheets, 100 bags of rice, 100 pieces of poly mats, 100 plastic plates and 100 plastic cups.

The other items were 10 cartons edible oil, a computer and a quantity of medicine.

Heavy rains last June five and 10 caused havoc in a number of communities including the District capital, Saltpond. According to NADMO, 114 houses were destroyed and a total of 2,312 people lost their belongings with some being rendered homeless. Mr Sebastian Atta-Fynn, who was offering computer training for the youth in the area had his two computers and a printer were destroyed a wall fell on them.

Mr Robert Quainoo-Arthur, District Chief Executive expressed the government's sympathy to the victims. He said even though the donation could not make up for what the victims lost in the rainstorm, the items were to mitigate the effects of the havoc.

Mr Quainoo-Arthur urged Ghanaians to insure their belongings against any disaster.

He also advised them to cultivate the habit of maintenance to avoid leaving their building to deteriorate.

Alhaji Abu Sadique Abban, District NADMO Co-ordinator, said the organisation was expecting more relief items and appealed to the victims who could not be covered to be patient and wait for their turn.
