The New Patriotic Party(NPP) member of Parliament(MP) for Fomena, in the Adansi North District of the Ashanti region, Hon. Akwesi Afrifa, has passed away.
He died on Thursday morning at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra after a short illness.
Family sources say the MP was taken ill after he returned from a conference on communication in Turkey about a fortnight. On arrival at the Kotoka International Airport he was rushed to a family clinic at Sakumono near Tema.
He was referred to the 37 Military Hospital where he reportedly fell into a comma for two weeks until he died this morning.
Mr. Afrifa was the Chairman of Parliament’s Committee on Communications since 2001 and described as an affable technocrat who was approached by all.
He was a native of Kyeaboso-Dompoase in the Ashanti Region and married with two children. He was born on September 22, 1955 and holds BA in History from University of Ghana in 1980 and Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Management(KNUST), 1989 and a teacher by profession.
He was an Assistant Director and a tutor at OWASS before he entered parliament. He is a Christian and fellowships with the Church of Pentecost.
Afrifa is the scoend member of parliament to die this year. Earlier in the year the MP for Offinso South, Hon Kwabena Sarfo passed away after an illness. Hon.
