Bolgatanga, Feb. 13, GNA - The Forest Services Division of the Forest Commission (FC) has inaugurated an eighteen-member Corridor Resource Management Committee (CORMCO) to assist in the sustainable management of forest resources at Nangodi in the Bolgatanga District. The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Rockson Bukari, noted that environmental degradation had become a global problem and said activities of people had resulted in massive devastation of large forests and wildlife species.

Mr Bukari observed that in spite of the persistent educational campaign on bush burning, indiscriminate tree felling and illegal mining activities, people continued to undertake activities that resulted in environmental degradation.

He commended the Northern Savannah Biodiversity Conservation Project (NSBCP) for sensitising the communities on the need to conserve the forest and wildlife.

Mr Bukari, therefore, urged members of CORMCO to be committed to their work to ensure that the objectives of NSBCP were achieved in the red Volta west area of the district.

The director for the Northern Savannah Zone of the Forest Services Division, Mr Edward Dzoboku who inaugurated the committee appealed to the Nangodi community to assist it work diligently.

He deplored the ritual bush burning in the area and expressed the hope that the trend would be reversed with the inauguration of the committee.
