Foundation donated medicals to Akatsi area health facilities

Akatsi (V/R), May 18, GNA - Dr. Moses Bonney, Senior Medical Officer in charge of the Akatsi Medical Centre, has called on government to urgently consider providing a district hospital for the Akatsi area. He said the population of the area was growing rapidly with vibrant economic activities, a situation which calls for accessibility to a major health facility.

Dr Bonney said this on Tuesday when he received assorted medical equipment value at 650 million cedis donated by a Holland-based development and relief non-governmental organisation, 'Adinkra Foundation', for distribution to six health centres in the district. The beneficiary centres are Akatsi, Ave-Dakpa, Gefia, Avenopedo, Whute and Avenopeme.

The items donated include beds, wheel chairs, refrigerators, air conditioners, sterilization tools, ultra sound machines, lab equipment, baby baths, microscopes, bedside stands, nurses uniforms and lamps. Some basic schools in six other communities also received educational materials valued at 30 million cedis from the foundation, which is also sponsoring the extension of potable water to the Akatsi Health Centre, and had donated a plastic water reservoir to the health centre at Whute.

Dr Bonney said the Akatsi Health Centre lacked the needed personnel and equipment, noting that apart from the doctor and a nurse, there were no other trained professional at the facility. He said as a result of the lack of professionals, the centre was always overwhelmed with workload, especially in the evenings. He called for the provision of a theatre for the centre. Dr Bonney commended the Foundation and its founder Mrs. Toinet van Schyndel, a Health Worker and her husband Mr. Van Schyndel, a Water Expert for their generosity and said the facilities would be put to good use.

Mrs. Anne Azasoo-van Hoof, Country Representative of the Foundation, said the organization was interested in health, educational and community development projects in the Volta region and urged the beneficiary communities to maintain the equipment and never leave them idle.
