The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) of Ghana Trades Union Congress (TUC) on Friday organised a day's workshop in Accra to build the capacity of its members on keeping the union strong through collective efforts.

It was also meant to educate members on the importance of organising and recruiting the various components of the union.

Mr. Edward Kareweh, Deputy General Secretary of GAWU said the workshop was to widen the recruitment team by including union leaders at all levels and would be organised in all the 10 regions.

He said Ghana could not attain a middle income status without the efforts of workers, adding that trade unionism was critical and important in all institutions.

“Workers of this country have to be rewarded by government and their various institutions, not monetarily, but in an appreciative way to encourage them to do more.”

Mr. Kareweh said the decision to embark on the educational workshop was to increase recruitment in the union membership both in the public and private sector.

“GAWU believes in an informed membership, which collectively enhance the work and capabilities of the union.”

He noted that the democracy Ghana was enjoying was expected to be applied in the institutions and offices to safeguard the interest of workers.

"Some workers in the country cannot express their interest in their offices”, and called on the TUC and the authorities to reverse the situation. **
