A Ghana Education Service (GES) depot keeper at the Afram Plains district office has appeared before the Mpraeso Circuit Court presided over by Justice Kwabena Asuman-Adu for allegedly stealing over ?25.4million belonging to the GES.
The accused, Emmanuel Yeboah who pleaded guilty with explanation, is on ?30 million bail.
The facts of the case as presented by Police Inspector Alex Gyamera Acheampong were that, on June 29, 2001 the director-General of GES ordered auditors from Accra to audit the books of the GES office in the district at Donkorkrom.
During the exercise, it was detected that the accused had allegedly embezzled an amount of ?25,453,460 belonging to GES.
The amount was the amount realized from sales the accused made out from books brought to the district. According to the prosecutor, when Yeboah was asked about the alleged embezzlement, he could not give any tangible explanation and was therefore reported to the police for his arrest.
The accused told the court that he had not embezzled any money but the problem of embezzlement was there before he took over at the office.
He however said that he once borrowed an amount of ?1.5million from his boss, one Mr. Adofo.
The court ordered the police to give a copy of the auditors’ report to the accused and his lawyer for study to enable him prepare his defence.
