Ho, Feb. 26, GNA - Mrs Olivia Afi Sosu, former Volta Regional Director of Education now retired, on Friday received an Opel Astra car from the Regional Directorate in appreciation of her contribution to the development of education in the region.

Mrs Sosu, who was the Regional Director between 2007 and 2008, also took home some parcels and a citation.

Reverend Samuel A. Amankwah, who took over from Mrs Sosu from 2008-2009, now on transfer to the Brong-Ahafo region, also received parcels and a citation. Mr Gabriel S. Kploanyi, Volta Regional Director of Education described the two as distinguished and dedicated Directors who deserved to be honoured.

He said the awards were to refute the misconception that teachers reward was in Heaven.

Mr Kploanyi hoped the awards would inspire and motivate GES staff in the Region to their best in the discharge of their duties. He advised Managers and Administrators in GES to fashion out reward and motivation packages, to bring the best out of their staff and improve service delivery.

The Regional Director said the Regional Directorate intends to reward and motivate staff of the Service, who show commitment towards the development of education in the Region and hoped this would inspire them to put up their best. Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister commended the awardees for their feat and said it was important for institutions to recognize and honour their colleagues, who showed exemplary sense of duty and meritorious services. He said the progress of nations depends on education for which reason the government remained committed to making resources available to the sector.

Mrs Sosu expressed her gratitude to the Region Directorate of the GES for appreciating her contribution to the development of education in the region and urged teachers to be committed to their profession and accept postings to any part of the country, because they may not know where their honour would come from. She said she derived inner satisfaction as a teacher but having to be given a car in appreciation of her modest contribution was too great.

"Though I'm retired, I think I'm ready to serve the Region more."
