GES organises workshop for teachers

The Ashanti Regional Inspectorate Unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES) is organizing an in-service training on reading skills and phonics for early grade teachers in the eight education circuits of the region.

This follows the Inspectorate Unit’s observation of teachers’ non adherence to the recommended and acceptable pattern of the new language policy.

Another failure posing a huge challenge is that the sound-charts, which were supplied to schools are not in use, with some known to “have been locked up in the teachers’ cupboard and others resting in the head teacher’s offices”.

Mr Emmanuel Agyei Amoako, one of the training facilitators, said this to the Ghana News Agency during one of such training programmes at Mampongteng in the Kwabre-East District.

A total of 200 teachers were in attendance.

He said all teachers in that category in the circuits in the Region will within one week take turns to undergo the training during which they would be given an in-depth knowledge and skills training in phonics, sound identification, decoding and word analysis.

“They would be taught how to use the appropriate teaching methods and skills that would enhance effective lesson delivery”, he said.

The expectation was that the workshop would encourage the teachers to go by the accepted recommended pattern of the new language policy and would be able to use the new sample integrated approach to literacy teaching time table.

He urged his colleague supervisors to do follow-up exercises to sustain effective teaching and learning methods in schools.

Mr Joseph Amoah, the District Director of Education, called on the teachers to take the opportunity to improve on their teaching skills.

He appealed to them to share the knowledge and experience they learn from the workshop with their colleagues.
