GESTA expresses concern about quality of imported electronic parts

Kumasi, Sept. 8, GNA - The Ashanti regional branch of the Ghana Electronics Servicing Technicians Association (GESTA) has expressed concern about the quality of electronic spare parts imported into the country.

The Association said currently, electronic spare parts on the market and used by its members to service electronic equipment brought to them were not of the required standard.

GESTA has therefore, asked the Ghana Standards Board (GSB) to carry out periodic checks on electronic parts imported into the country to know the countries of origin and manufacturers, as a measure of stopping the dumping of sub-standard electronic equipment on the Ghanaian market. Mr John Asonaba Kwabena Boakye-Mensah, Ashanti Regional Chairman of GESTA, who expressed this concern at a press conference in Kumasi on Wednesday, said this way, people will be assured of getting their monies worth when they send their electronic equipment for repairs and the technicians will also get the satisfaction of using quality parts to do their work.

The Association further called on all government agencies, which inspect electronic parts at the ports and other entry points and at the markets to strengthen their capacities and intensify their operations to ensure that inferior parts were not imported into the country. Mr Boakye-Mensah said servicing of electronic equipment like radio, television, video decks, video compact discs and compact discs players, was very important to ensure that the people got information, education and entertainment from their gadgets.

He regretted, however, that despite the importance of information, education, culture and religion in the human development, due recognition was not being accorded electronic technicians and called for a change of attitude.

Mr Boakye-Mensah asked the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to improve upon its efficiency, pointing out that the numerous power outages do a lot of damage to electronic equipment and appliances, as most of the repair works they had to do were as results of that. 8 Sept. 05
