Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited (GGBL) in collaboration with WaterAid Ghana marked the World Water Day with a 10KM fun walk dubbed ‘Accra Walks for Water 2013' to raise funds for Akropong School for the Blind.

It was to raise funds for an integrated Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) project for the school.

Accra Walks for Water, which started from the Aviation Social Centre through principal streets in the capital attracted over 2000 participants from GGBL and WaterAid, Green is Easy Foundation, student groups, teams from the Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Fire Service and hundreds of Ghanaians who turned up in their numbers to support this worthy cause.

Speaking before the Walk, Preba Arkaah Greenstreet, Corporate Relations Director, GGBL said: “GGBL commemorates World Water Day every year through employee led initiatives aimed at creating awareness and focusing attention on the effective management of water resources and environmental stewardship.

“This year, in line with the global theme for World Water Day celebrations, we are collaborating with WaterAid Ghana to raise funds in support of an integrated WASH project for the Akropong School of the Blind.

“For us, it is another opportunity to collaborate on the provision of a critical resource to improve the lives of the students and teachers of the Akropong School of the Blind. As a business, we believe in empowering vulnerable groups and communities through our Water of Life Programme which is one of our major corporate social responsibility focus areas; investing in providing or improving access to safe drinking water to over 65 communities across the country since 2007."

She further indicated that GGBL, through employee donations and support from Diageo’s business in North America, will match all funds raised up to the full cost of the GHC79,000 project.
