Tarkwa (W/R), Dec 6, GNA - Mr George Mireku Duker, Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Chief Executive has presented a cheque of 1,000 Ghana cedis to a group of deaf and dumb people at a ceremony at Tarkwa. Presenting the cheque, Mr Duker told the group not to use their disability to beg for alms at roadside, but to find other ways of making ends meet.
He said their plight was natural and that should not deter them from pursuing ventures that will enable them make a living. He said the Municipal Assembly was prepared to help the physically challenged when they come together and embark on a project, adding, "a percentage of the Common Fund has been set aside for them and they should form groups to access".
Mr Duker disclosed that the Assembly will help open workshops to help physically challenged people learn a trade. He advised the group to use the money judiciously. Mr Abraham Quayson, Tarkwa Nsuaem Municipal Social Welfare Officer commended the Municipal Chief Executive for his commitment towards the plight of physically challenged people. He said the Assembly promptly paid GH¢400 school fees for a blind student at Legon.
He promised that Social Welfare will supervise the group to put the money to good use. Mr Duker disclosed that the Municipal Assembly will employ an interpreter at the government hospital, Tarkwa to explain to the health personnel the health needs of the deaf and dumb, and pleaded with the Ministry of Health to do same. Mr. George Kakra Usher, a representative of the group thanked the MCE for the money.
