As part of its corporate social responsibility, the Management of GOtv Ghana Limited on Monday donated 200 pieces of reflector safety vests to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Nii Amah Dagadu, Regional Marketing Manager, Multichoice Ghana, who made the presentation, said many countries in Africa had challenges on their roads.

He said many countries across West Africa where GOtv operated, the Company had supported the Police Service as well as developed road infrastructure.

Mr Dagadu said issues relating to road safety were important to GOtv, hence the reflective vests to help improve the visibility of the police on the street (road traffic controllers) to enable them provide better services and ensure the smooth flow of traffic.

As the company's contribution to help improve on the quality of the education, he said, over 100 schools had been hooked onto DSTV, to facilitate teaching and learning.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Angwubutoge Awuni, the Director-General of the MTTD, who received the items, expressed gratitude to the company for the contribution.

DCOP Awuni told GNA that traffic direction involved protection of lives, and individuals with no skills and training could easily cause road accidents, adding that “these people at times create traffic jams”.

The Director-General disclosed that the MTTD had just opened a training programme for national service persons, at the end of it they would be assigned to direct traffic, since they had already acquired skills.

DCOP Awuni, therefore, cautioned illegal road traffic controllers to desist from such unlawful acts where especially they extorted monies from motorists.

The Ghana Police Service, he said, was embarking on an exercise to arrest and prosecute culprits.
