GPRTU Regional Chairman's position challenged

Accra, July 26, GNA - The Chairman of the New Tema Station Welfare Association, Mr Isaac Ahuma Kubi, has declared his intention to contest for the position of the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Accra on Tuesday, Mr Ahuma Kubi, who is also the Chairman of the Teshie-Nungua Branch of the Union, said his decision was to move the Union forward.

He commended the incumbent Regional Chairman for his contribution towards the development of the Union, but said after 20 years, Alhaji Tetteh, the Chairman, who is also the National Vice Chairman, had exhausted all of his ideas and urged him to give others the chance to also contribute their quotas. Mr Ahuma Kubi, 54 years, said he would ensure probity, accountability and democracy in the Union if he was given the mandate. He said he would initiate plans for members to acquire their own vehicles and introduce welfare packages for them to improve their lot. The aspiring Greater Accra GPRTU Chairman promised to establish a number of businesses and income generating ventures connected to transportation industry including the establishment of an insurance company for the union to help to improve the fortunes of members and their occupation.

He promised to ensure proper accounts for money and tolls collected from members including the building fund and to facilitate the early completion of the building complex of the Union to house the Regional Secretariat.

Mr Ahuma Kubi said the present administrators of the Union lacked what he called 93mission and vision" and said he would provide 93a new road with a new team and great ideas" and ensured that constitutional procedures of t= he GPRTU were followed to the letter to eliminate fear, victimization, harassment and intimidation from the ranks of the Union. He promised to establish a driving school for the Union to train drivers, especially those running commercial businesses as a way of curbing accidents on the roads. Again, Mr Ahuma Kubi promised a hostel for drivers, who travel out of their base to rest overnight instead of sleeping in their vehicles Current regional executives including Mr Robert Sarbah, Vice Chairman, Mr Emmanuel Kwakuvie and Mr Jacob Odae, first and second trustees respectively have declared their intention to stand for re-election.
