Accra, June 1, GNA - Mr Alando A. Sidik, General Secretary of the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPTRU), on Monday called for the review of the law that permits first offending drivers to be jailed, because it is not in the interest of the nation. He rather expressed the need for such offenders to be fined and given capacity building training with the monies they pay at the law courts.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra on Monday, Mr Sidik said, there was the need for government to invest in the training of drivers, in order to reduce the carnage on the roads and flouting of motor and traffic regulations.

He said the GPRTU was ready to co-operate with the police and other organs of the State to achieve these objectives. Mr Sidik said the driving profession, was a noble one and asked the public not to look down on drivers because they facilitate trade and commerce to the advantage of the country and businessmen in particular.
