Accra, July 25, GNA- The Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has called for the inclusion of a representative from the Council in a committee of enquiry which had been set up to investigate the recent shooting incident involving the Police and some drivers of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) at Ashaiman on June 3, 2008. A statement signed by Mr. Naveh-Fio Bright, General Secretary of Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) said a representative of the drivers on the committee would make the outcome and the report of the findings more credible and acceptable to all stakeholders. "The Council was the umbrella body coordinating all commercial transport unions in the country of which the GPRTU was a subset. It would be recalled that when the incident happened on June 3, the drivers sent the news to the Council. The Council quickly called an emergency meeting the following day to discuss the issue together with the national executives of GPRTU," the statement said.

It said a delegation was then sent to Ashaiman to meet the drivers and to cool tempers whilst the Council also assured their members that they were going to call for an in-depth investigations to come out with the truth. "The Council then went on to meet the AsHaiman police and had a caucus with them and later on left for the Tema Police Command. At Tema, the Council interacted with the Police Commander and his assistance and promised them that, "we were going to talk to our people to calm down," the statement said. The Council said without the representation of the drivers, they would not be comfortable or feel at home to divulge vivid information of the whole incident. The statement urged the Ministry of the Interior to take a second look at the structure and composition of the committee in order to reflect a true picture of both the police and drivers.
