Takoradi, May 15, GNA - Ghana Telecom (GT) on Wednesday donated 35 electricity poles to the Takoradi Polytechnic towards the provision of street lights on the school campus.
The poles, valued at more than 7,000 Ghana cedis were donated as part of GT's social responsibilities to communities in which it operates.
Mr Emmanuel Adusei Essel, Western Regional Manager of the GT presented the poles during the activities to mark World Telecommunication Day in the region.
He said the company was prepared to offer similar assistance to institutions which would need its support for a good cause. Mr Essel reiterated the company's appeal to the general public and the media to help check the frequent stealing of telephone cables that continued to pose a big challenge to management.
He said GT continued to spend several millions of cedis to replace stolen cables, a situation that was severely affecting the expansion and modernisation programmes of the company.
Mrs Victoria Osafo, Western Regional Cooperate Affairs Manager said any person who would provide information that would lead to the arrest of cable thieves would be adequately rewarded.
The identity of such informants would be kept secret, she said. Mr Elvis Nukporpe, Takoradi Polytechnic Student Representative Council (SRC) member in charge of students' welfare received the poles on behalf of the school. He said the SRC approached GT for assistance to provide street lights on campus due to rampant stealing, snatching of mobile phones and other criminal activities by miscreants who found their way to the school under the cover of darkness. He thanked GT for the support and appealed to other institutions to contribute to the project estimated at more than 30,000 Ghana cedis.
