Himan (W/R), Feb. 24, GNA - Members of the Prestea-Himan Small Scale Miners Association have appealed to the government to streamline the operations of the sector to enable it to contribute more meaningfully to the growth of the economy.

Nana Kwame Asuaman Adu, General Secretary of the Association, said the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Presidential Special Initiatives should help to restructure and monitor the sector to make it more beneficial to the country.

He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Himan on Monday on the activities of the Small Scale Miners, popularly known as "Galamsey". Nana Adu said the call from certain quarters for the banning of Galamsey should be ignored because that would ruin the lives of many people, their families and dependants. He said Galamsey operators should rather be supported to acquire equipment and skills to enable them to contribute to the growth of the economy.

Mallam Mohammad Nuhu, an Executive commended Mr. Joseph Boahen Aidoo, the Western Regional Minister for his understanding and assistance to Association.
