Garbage clearing in VR under NYEP to cost 240 million cedis

Jasikan, Jan. 22, GNA - A total of 240 million cedis is to be spent on clearing piled-up garbage and de-silt gutters under the sanitation component of National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP) in the Volta Region.

Under the programme tools would be provided for youth engaged on the job, to lead periodic clean-up exercises in all he district capitals in the Region.

Mr Lawrence Laryea, Operations Supervisor of Zoomlion, the company in charge of the waste management module of the NYEP said this during a clean-up exercise organized by the company at Jasikan.

He said his company had the capacity to help local government bodies manage sanitation issues, noting that soon 2,000 motor-tricycles would arrive for distribution to the regions to facilitate the daily collection of refuse.

Mr Solomon Kwame Donkor, Jasikan District Chief Executive (DCE) announced that 30 more Environmental Officers would soon be engaged to beef up numbers of these officers who would go from house to house to ensure sanitation bylaws were obeyed.

Mr Joseph Denteh, Nkwanta District Chief Executive launching the programme in Nkwanta said a greening programme to grow trees was going along with the sanitation exercise in the District.

Speaking at a similar cleanup exercise under the aegis for Zoomlion at Kadjebi, Mr Hope Howusu, District Coordinating Director (DCD), said the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment had directed that clean up exercises were organized weekly throughout the country.

He said this would rekindle the communal spirit and rid the communities of filth and ailments.
