Gbi Traditional Council suspends book of condolence, calls for quarantine of ‘lockdown escapees’

The Gbi Traditional Council in Hohoe has suspended the signing of book of condolence in memory of the late Togbega Gabusu VI, Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area.

The Council has also directed that all travellers who moved into the traditional area in an attempt to escape President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s directive on the partial lockdown of some cities to “as a matter of necessity observe a 14-day self-quarantine”.

A press statement signed by Togbe Worde IV, Acting President of the Gbi Traditional Council said the suspension of the signing of the book of condolence in honour of the late Togbega Gabusu and the call on ‘lockdown escapees’ to self-quarantine were measures the Council had taken to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus disease.

The Council noted that the panic movement of people out of the lockdown areas into various communities and traditional areas “may increase the risk of the Gbi Traditional Area recording a case of the virus..."

The statement further directed that natives and other residents in Gbi should not travel outside the area until further notice, while calling on natives residing in other areas to stay wherever they found themselves.

The Council admonished residents to continue to adhere to measures put in place to stop the spread of the virus and also report any suspected case to the Hohoe Municipal Hospital.

The Ghana News Agency (GNA) observed that the Hohoe Municipality had recorded high numbers of returnees escaping a partial lockdown of Accra, Kumasi and Tema as directed by the President in response to the coronavirus disease.
