Gender Ministry holds walk to end violence against women

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has organised a health walk in the Ashiaman Municipality to end gender-based violence against women and promote sexual reproductive rights in the country.

The walk was to promote the welfare of women and children through the use of social protection interventions to achieve national development.

Ms Juliana Amponsah, Acting Executive Secretary, Domestic Violence Secretariat, said the walk was targeted at educating men and boys on violence against women to promote gender equality in the Municipality and the country at large.

She said it is only when men understand the concept of violence meted out to women that the practice would be curtailed in their homes.

The theme was: "Men and Boys, Walk to Promote Sexual and Reproductive Right and End Gender Based Violence."

Ms Amponsah pointed out that sexual violence is on the rise in the country because couples do not understand the health related implications as far as sexual intercourse is concerned.

Mr Alfred Kwame Agbesi, Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashiaman, thanked the Ministry for undertaken the exercise in the community and urged men to control their temper in all situations.

He also called for peaceful co-existence in the homes.
