Ghana Armed Forces Northern Command Inter-Unit boxing competition ends

The three-day 2012 Northern Command Inter-Unit boxing competition of the Ghana Armed Forces ended on Thursday with the Third Battalion of Infantry ,(3BN) Sunyani emerging the overall best Unit.

They won four out of the total eight weight divisions in the competition held at the ‘Scorpion’ Arena at the Liberation Barracks in Sunyani

The other participating Units were from the Fourth Battalion of Infantry, (4BN) Kumasi, Air Borne Force (ABF) and Sixth Battalion of Infantry (6BN) both from Tamale.

The first and second runners-up positions of the highly entertaining competition went to the 6BN and ABF Units respectively, with Private Moore of 3BN adjudged the best boxer of the competition.

Lance Corporal Kpogo of 6BN was the best loser whilst Private Anum of 3BN and Lance Corporal Owusu of 6BN emerged winners of the Bantamweight and Featherweight divisions.

Corporal Wonder Akator and Private Addo of 3BN won the Light and the Lightwelterweight categories respectively, with Lance Corporal Korley of ABF annexing the Welterweight division prize.

Private Moore of 3BN won the Middleweight division crown, with Corporal Afum and Lance Corporal Owusu of 6BN emerging victors in the Light-Heavy and Heavyweight divisions.

Lieutenant Colonel Bob Afram, Chief Operations Officer of the Garrison in his closing remarks congratulated the various contingents as well as the organizers for their efforts in achieving the initial set objectives of esprit de corps, team spirit, confidence and individual endurance, as well as the selection of a formidable team to represent the Northern Command in future national competitions.

He urged the soldiers to exhibit the skills acquired at the competition in defending the nation and not to use it to intimidate civilians or suspected criminals.

The Chief Operations Officer encouraged the boxers to collaborate effectively with other security agencies to help sustain the peace the nation was enjoying and to be extended before, during and after the 2012 general elections.

Ten of the boxers would be short-listed from the initial 20 boxers selected during the competition to represent the Command at the national competition due to be hosted in Accra.

Trophies, certificates and crates of assorted drinks were presented to winners and officials of the various Units.**
