Accra, Sept. 21, GNA - Old Students of Ghana National College, Nanan= om, on Wednesday organised a health walk and screening for members to commemorate the second Founder's Day celebration to improve their health status. It was also to create awareness on the importance of regular exercises= .. More than 100 alumni participated in the walk which began from Arko Adjei Interchange through principal streets like the Osu Oxford Street to the Osu Cemetery road and up to the Liberation Circle and back to base. Mr Egbert Faibille Junior, National Vice President of Nananom advised Ghanaians to undertake frequent body exercises to prevent premature death. He said the exercise was to ensure that members were in good physical fitness.

Mr Faibille said currently, the major causes of death in the country were complications from non-communicable diseases like hypertension and diabetes, which could be avoided through regular body exercises like walking, jogging and participation in games. He said there was the need to commemorate the contribution of Ghana'= s First President Osagyefo Dr kwame Nkrumah to the country's development, noting that he (Dr Nkrumah) was also the founder of the College. Mr Faibille said Nananom decided to organise the health walk on quarterly basis and on public holidays to enable the members to exercise their bodies.

Mr Emmanuel Richter, an alumnus, said the walk was organised in addition to raise funds to develop the school's infrastructure and motivate the teachers to discharge their duties well. He said the Association had been able to set up a library, home scienc= e block and provided water pump for the school. Mr Richter said it was an effort to mobilise the old students to contribute their quotas to the College's development. "We will raise funds to launch an endowment fund for the College,"= he added. Mrs Jean Sparks Aidoo, another alumnus, expressed gratitude to the organisers and called on other colleagues to join the campaign against illness in society. She said the screening enabled her to know her health status. September 21, the Founder's Day is to commemorate the birth of Dr Kw= ame Nkrumah in Ghana.
