Ghana Navy-Tema Youth clash: Chief of Naval Staff meets Tema Traditional Council

The leadership of the Ghana Navy led by the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu, has met the chiefs of Tema over the death of two young adults of the community who were reportedly killed in a clash with personnel of the Navy.

The leadership of the Ghana Navy on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, sympathised with the Tema Traditional Council over the deaths.

In a post shared on Facebook, Rear Admiral Yakubu is reported to have called for calm as the Ghana Police Service investigate the clash that led to the death of the victims.

The Navy also indicated that its delegation to the traditional council was received by the Municipal Chief Executive of Tema, Nii Armah Ashittey, and the Greater Accra Regional Minister-designate, Titus Glover.

“Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Rear Admiral Issah Adam Yakubu has led a high-level delegation to commiserate with the Tema Traditional Council and the two bereaved families, on Tuesday 23 April 2024, following the unfortunate incident that happened in the area last week.

“The delegation was received by the Municipal Chief Executive of Tema, Honourable (Hon) Nii Armah Ashittey and the Regional Minister designate, Hon Titus Glover,” part of the post shared by the Navy reads.

It added, “The CNS in his remarks called for calm from all sides and wait for the police investigations to be concluded. Hon Titus Glover assured that everything will be done to expedite the investigations. He took the opportunity to call on the youth to exercise restraint and allow the law to take its course”.

According to a report by graphic.gh.com, the victims succumbed to gunshot wounds they sustained during the clash with the Navy on April 12, 2024, during this year's Kplejoo festival, when the youth engaged in a street procession.

Residents of Tema have been demanding justice for the killing of the two young men.

They say that no action has been taken by the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces to bring the perpetrators of the gruesome murders to book.

Members of the community have been holding protests since the incident demanding justice. A viral video of one of the protests showed several ritualists, both male and female, raining curses on the perpetrators of the alleged crime.

The traditionalists could be seen in the video, some half naked, pouring libations and chanting on the streets. After their incantations, they all proceeded to simultaneously break eggs and the bottles they were holding on the street.
