Ghana Prisons Service poised to offer tertiary education for inmates

The Ghana Prisons Service is pushing to offer tertiary education for inmates across the country.

Eastern Regional Prisons Commander, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDOP) Isaac Egyiri says the service will soon reach an agreement with some tertiary institutions on how to introduce tertiary education to inmates.

He made the disclosure during the interior minister's visit to security agencies in Koforidua.

The visit by Interior Minister, Ambrose Derry to the Eastern Region was to acquaint himself with challenges facing security services in the region.

The Minister who first met with officers of the Ghana National Fire Service encouraged them to give off their best in the fight against fire.

He assured them of government's support to resource them in pursuit of their duty.

Mr. Ambrose Dery was welcomed to the Koforidua prisons by the regional commander and his entourage.

In his welcome address, the Regional Commander and Deputy Director of Prisons, Isaac Kofi Egyiri emphasized the need to offer tertiary education to inmates who are willing to take up further studies.

To confirm their commitment to ensuring education for inmates, the commander revealed a total of eighteen inmates at the Nsawam prisons have been registered to sit for the upcoming BECE and the West Africa secondary certificate examination.

Expressing concern about high risk security issues in the prisons, Mr. Egyiri appealed for support from government to fight the sneaking of contraband goods including mobile phones and narcotic drugs into prisons.

The minister expressed his appreciation for the commitment of officers towards ensuring protection of inmates.

He however warned them to desist from colluding with inmates to carry out crime in prisons.
