Ghana Red Cross Society supports flood victims

The Ghana Red Cross Society over the weekend donated assorted items valued at GH?150,000.00 to about 264 families who were victims of the June 3 twin-disaster in Accra.

The items included blankets, bed sheets, clothes, hygiene kits and mosquito nets were distributed among the aged, pregnant women, children, widows and lactating mothers.

Mr Louis Okyere, Communications Manager, Ghana Red Cross Society, said following the disaster, the Red Cross activated 100 of its community based rescue and first aid team members to provide immediate assistance to victims.

Mr Okyere said the society also conducted rapid needs assessment on June 7 with the use of Rapid Assessment Mobile Phone base survey, in five communities namely; Nima, Awoshie, Alajo, Adabraka and Low McCarthy Hill.

Dr Agyaku Addo, President of Ghana Red Cross Society, said the society had also set up a Disaster Emergency Fund with GH?106,000.00 to support the flood victims.

A victim Ms Faustina Amponsah, a 29 year- old mother of two, said the drains took away almost everything in her room.

She expressed gratitude to the Ghana Red Cross Society for coming to their aid.

Another victim Mr Kwaku Gyamfi, a physically challenged person said his wife and children are staying with his aunt while he sleeps in his damaged car.

Madam Idara Udoh Joy, a member of the Regional Disaster Response Team of the International Federation of Red Cross, took advantage of the gathering and educated victims on the proper use of insecticide mosquito treated nets.
