The Ghana Red Cross Society of the Greater Accra Region on Wednesday organized a two-day training for 100 volunteers to educate the public on cholera and its prevention.

Mr. Eric Asamoah Darko, Greater Accra Regional Manager of the Ghana Red Cross, said the training was as a result of the cholera outbreak in Accra recently, hence the need to educate the public at the grassroots level.

He said communities to benefit from the education included Tema, Ashaiman, Accra Metro, Ga East and Ga South, starting from Saturday June 09 and every other Saturday for the next three months.

Mr. Asamoah Darko said other communities in the Greater Accra Region would not be part of the exercise due to insufficient funding and appealed to the government to support them financially.

“I appeal to the government to assist the society to rapidly respond to situations like accidents, man-made or natural disasters,” he said.

Mr. Asamoah Darko complained about the Ghana Red Cross Society’s inability to rapidly respond to the Boeing 727 cargo plane crash near the El-Wak Sports Stadium and said it was due to lack of vehicles to transport staff to the venue of the accident.

He appealed to the public, particularly the youth, to register with the Ghana Red Cross Society as volunteers.**
