Tema, Aug. 19, GNA - Ghanaians have been advised to acquire the needed knowledge on climate change as a first step towards reducing its effect on the country.

Captain Bob Tarrant, Commanding Officer of HMS Endurance, a British Navy Ice breaker ship said, having the knowledge about climate would help Ghanaians to adapt to it as no country could escape its devastating effects.

Captain Tarrant, who paid a courtesy call on the Tema Mantse, Nii Adjei Kraku II, on Monday told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that relevant government institutions must create the awareness on the causes and effect of climate change on both the social and economic activities of the country.

He stated that water stress, increase in the rise of sea levels and migration of fishes from Ghana seas are some of the effects on the country, adding that the increase of carbondioxide released into the environment and other human activities were some of the cause of climate change.

Elaborating on the activities of the ship in Ghana, the Commanding Officer said the ship berthed at the Tema Port on the early hours of Monday from South Africa with 120 cabin crew.

He indicated that during its 11-day stay in Ghana, the crew members would interact with the Ghanaian Navy in Tema and Sekondi-Takoradi to discuss issues on climate change.

Captain Tarrant said such meetings would enable the two countries to share ideas on climate change especially on what the Navy could do to control its effects, adding that such meetings was in relation with the upcoming United Nation Summit on climate change to be held in Accra.

He thanked the people of Tema for the cordial relationship with the Navy and also congratulated Ghanaians for developing the country. Nii Adjei Kraku also thanked the Commanding Officer for the visit and recounted the history of the relationship between the people of Tema and the British.
