Ghanaians commended for peaceful funeral for late President Mills

The Chief of Gomoa Nkoranza in the Central Region, Nana Abobo Egyir V, has commended President John Dramani Mahama, the Funeral Planning Committee and the entire Ghanaians for organizing a grand funeral for late President John Evans Atta Mills.

Speaking with the Ghana News Agency at a funeral organized by the Gomoa West District Assembly, Gomoa Akyempim and the Gomoa Ajumako Traditional Councils at Apam in honor of the late President, Nana Abobo Egyir said he was highly impressed with the peaceful manner the ceremony was organized and the involvement of every Ghanaian irrespective of political affiliations.

“Ghanaians really have demonstrated that they have developed the can-do-it spirit,” and urged them to use the same spirit in the development efforts of the nation.

Nana Abobo Egyir said the way Ghanaians comported themselves in the funeral made the work of the security forces very easy.

He said the title “Asomdwee” (peace) conferred on the late President manifested as his funeral, which was organized nationwide, went on peacefully even at places where there were no security personnel.

Nana Abobo Egyir, who is the Sanahene of Gomoa Akyempim, advised Ghanaians to respect their leaders and stop downplaying on their integrity only to turn round to shower praises on them after their death. “Do we need to destroy our leaders because of the political power we want,” he asked.

He said if political discussions could be based on issues and what one could achieve for the nation instead of insults, it would be of a great help to Ghanaians to make informed choices.

At the funeral, Obrifo Ahunako Ahor Ankobea II, Omanhene of Akyempim called on the National Media Commission to suspend phone-in programmes on radio stations till the December elections were over. He added that the phenomenon contributed to the creation of political tension in the country.

He urged Ghanaians to take a lesson from Professor Mills’ humility and tolerance.

The Omanhene said Prof. Mills preaching of peace would be meaningless if Ghanaians, particularly the media would be allowed to go the old way of doing things.

Obrempong Nyanful Krampah X, Omanhene of Gomoa Ajumako, called on politicians to stop the hypocrisy and give credit where it was due for their opponents to be encouraged to work harder for the development of the country.

Mr. Anthony Eyiah-Quansah, Presiding Member of Gomoa West District Assembly, said the death of Prof. Mills must bring some changes into the lifestyle of Ghanaians, especially his time consciousness, humility and forgiveness.

The Reverend Samuel Ayimah, Superintendent Minister of the Mumford Circuit of the Methodist Church in a sermon said, Prof. Mills gave his whole life to God because, “He (God) created him and allowed him (Prof. Mills) to be used the way God likes.”

“Politicians must realize that they were created by God and to do His will, instead of throwing their weights about,” he stressed.**
