The body of a seven-year-old girl (name withheld) has been retrieved from the Tono irrigation canal at Bonia after she drowned yesterday afternoon.
Information gathered by GhanaWeb indicates that the victim was crossing the canal on a footbridge when she lost balance and fell into the moving water.
A brother of the victim, who spoke to GhanaWeb said the girl was returning home from their mother’s vegetable farm where she was the whole day driving away animals when she met her unfortunate demise.
He said having felt the need to go back home, she used the footbridge but lost balance and fell through a gap in the bridge into the water.
The incident happened around 1pm.
The body of the little girl was retrieved from the water several metres away later in the night and has since been laid to rest.
The incident has left the community in deep grief.
