AN Electrification project for the Glefe community in the South Ablekuma Constituency was inaugurated at a ceremony at the weekend.
The project, which cost ?1.5 billion was funded by the government and supported through the self-help initiative programme by the people in the area.
Glefe is a very deprived community, which lies at the western part of Dansoman, a suburb of Accra, and almost cut off from the rest of the Accra metropolis by Lake Bebu.
It lacks social amenities such as potable water, access roads and drainage systems, among others.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for South Ablekuma, Ms Theresa Ameley Tagoe, under whose efforts the project became a reality, stated that plans are far advanced to provide the people with some basic social infrastructure to lift the image of the community.
Ms Tagoe cautioned the people to desist from connecting the electricity illegally into their premises, but rather resort to the legal processes for the effective development of the area.
She also reminded the people to cultivate the culture of maintenance for the efficient and effective monitoring and supervision of the project for it to last.
Ms Tagoe said she will advocate for the area to be considered for polling stations, which has been denied them for the past years, adding that, ? it is not good enough for you to be crossing the lake during election times.?
She commended the people for mobilising themselves to develop their community. The Assembly-member for the area, Mr Abednego Tettey Tetteh, commended the government for putting smiles on the faces of the people, who had been in darkness for far too long.
Mr Tetteh, however, indicated that a total of ?41 million loan was secured to purchase the low tension poles while the government provided 28 high tension poles and a transformer.
He expressed gratitude to the project committee as well as the MP for their dedication and commitment for the realisation of their dream.
The Chairman of the South Ablekuma Sub-metro, Mr Kofi Ofori, urged the people in the area to continue with the self-help initiative spirit, adding that ? it is through these efforts that the area will be transformed.?
