Goethe Institute marks 6th National German Cultural Festival

The Goethe Institute together with the Ghanaian Association of Teachers of German and the German Academic Exchange Service on Friday celebrated the 6th National German Cultural Festival in Accra.

The event was attended by Over 500 students from different institutions that are learning German language.

Activities to mark the day include a guided tour through a library, watching educational movies, reading corner, children games and street painting.

Students, who performed in different categories of competition, were awarded prizes according to their creativity, costumes, language proficiency and over all impressions.

Mrs Dr Renate Schimkoret, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of German, said the event was to motivate the students to learn German language and to enjoy being part of community learners of German.

She said, “even though German language is not taught in many schools in Ghana, there are many people in Ghana who speak the German language”.

Mrs Schimkoret noted that, German language is not spoken only in Germany, but other countries as well so when people learn the language for their profession work, it does help them where ever they find themselves.

Mrs Victoria Antwi, President of Ghanaian Association of Teachers of German, advised the students not to see the language as difficult, but they rather should see it as a challenging one.

She said, “The competition is not to show who the best is but to create awareness for people to have interest to learn the language”

Schools that attended the event include University of Education-Winneba, Ghana Institute of languages-Accra, Methodist University College-Accra, Accra Academy, Opoku Ware SHS- Kumasi, and Accra Wesley Girls.
