Gomoa District Assembly declares 2006 Sanitation Year

Apam (C/R), Feb. 17, GNA - The Gomoa District Assembly has declared 2006 as Sanitation Year.

Ms Joyce Mildred Aidoo, who announced this at a workshop on Urban Poverty Reduction Project (UPRP) at Apam, said March 6-10, would be declared Sanitation Week, during which Chiefs, Queen-mothers, Assembly and Unit Committee members, schools and churches would be mobilised to clean their localities.

The workshop was organised by the Social Investment Fund (SIF) to prepare stakeholders for the next phase of the Project. Ms Aidoo said the Assembly would ensure that the programme was sustained with the reactivation of Urban, Town and Area Councils and appealed to Chiefs, Assembly Members and other opinion leaders for support to enhance the performance of the Assembly. Mrs. Elizabeth Abena Nkrumah, Zonal SIF Officer for the Central and Western regions, said the Urban Poverty Reduction Project would be implemented in Accra, Kumasi, Sekondi-Takoradi, Ho, Swedru, Akim Oda, Koforidua, Agogo, Apam, Kasoa, Tema and Wenchi. She announced that it would be launched in March 2006 for the take-off in 2007 and said a mid-term review of the project would be held in 2008 and concluded in March 2012.

She said African Development Bank (ADB), the Government of Ghana and beneficiary communities would fund the projects. The ADB has provided a loan of 37.5 million dollars while the government and beneficiary communities provide 4.7 million dollars counterpart funding. Mr Fred Addae, Gomoa District Co-ordinating Director, appealed to the people to take the project seriously to give the town a face-lift. 17 Feb. 06
