Gomoa East plan towards creation of new district

Gomoa Panfokrom (C/R) Sept. 24, GNA-- Interim committees have been formed to plan towards the creation of another district to be known as Gomoa East out of the Gomoa District in the Central Region. The finance and administration, development planning, social services, justice and security, re-demarcation and public relations and complaints committees, have been charged to plan towards the creation of the new district.

They were formed at a day's capacity building workshop, organised by Mr. Sam Quarm, the Member of Parliament for Gomoa East, to sensitize the people on the creation of the new district, at Gomoa Panfokrom. Traditional rulers, assembly members, opinion leaders and other stakeholders from the area attended the event, which was under the theme "Towards the creation of a separate District."

A team of resource persons took the participants through topics like: Concept of Decentralization and Good Governance, Decentralization in Practice, Is Gomoa East Ripe for a Separate District Assembly, Development at the Local Level, Harnessing Resources for local development.

Mr. Sam Quarm said the government would announce the creation of a separate district for the area and urged the committees to work hard and put in place plans for the development of the area.

Mr. Benjamin K. Otoo, lecturer at the Cape Coast Polytechnic, a resource person, said the there was salt deposits in the area and called for the establishment of salt industries towards the economic development of the area.

He also called on Government to build dams on River Akora and River Ayensu for irrigation to promote agriculture, and to improve education and health towards the development of the Gomoa East area. Mr. Paul Djan, the Central Regional Population Officer, another resource person, speaking on Development at the Local Level, urged the communities to initiate development programmes to improve the standards of living of the people.

Obirifo Ahunako Ahor Ankobea II, Omanhene for Gomoa Akyempim and Okatakyi Nyanful Krampa X, Omanhene of Gomoa Ajumako, who co-chaired the function, promised that chiefs in the two areas would contribute towards the development of the new district when created.
