Gomoa Mampong (C/R), Jan 16, GNA - The people of Mampong, a farming community in the Gomoa District have established an Education Endowment Fund to support brilliant but needy children in the area. An amount of five million cedis to be used as seed money for the fund was raised at a function, which coincided with the annual Akwambo festival of the Chiefs and people of the area at the weekend.

Mr Fred Oscar Abban, Assembly Member for the Kokofu-Mampong Electoral Area, who launched the Fund cautioned parents against using the establishment of the Fund as "a licence to shirk their responsibilities" towards the education of their children.

He said the background of prospective beneficiaries would be thoroughly investigated by the Board of Trustees before selection and the granting of the scholarships.

The Board would also organise fund-raising activities to support the scheme, the Assembly Member stated.

Mr Abban, who is also the Presiding Member of the Gomoa District Assembly, said efforts were being made to connect the area to the national electricity grid at Kokofu, a distance of about two kilometres. Nana Mensah Essel VIII, Chief of the town commended the Presiding Member for his efforts aimed at improving education in the town and said apart from providing reading books and stationary for pupils he was also instrumental in the establishment of a primary school in the community. Formerly pupils from Mampong had to trek in and out daily to attend school at Kokofu.

Mr Joe Donkoh, a businessman and a citizen of the town urged the people to sustain their communal spirit and commended them for establishing the Fund.

He donated one million cedis towards the Fund and presented ten bags of cement towards some community projects.
