The Gomoa West District Assembly has disbursed 20,000 Ghana Cedis from its share of the Common Fund, to 31 brilliant, but needy students, for the payment of their school fees.

The Assembly has also released 10,000 Ghana Cedis from the same fund to the Gomoa West District Education Directorate, to conduct the Super Mock Examination for final year students of Junior High Schools (JHS), as part of efforts to prepare them adequately for the Basic Education Certificate Examinations.

Mr Theophilus Adu-Mensah, Gomoa West District Chief Executive (DCE), who made this known at a ceremony at Apam, said the move was to assist the students, because their parents could not afford the payment of their fees.

He said it was the responsibility of the government under President John Dramani Mahama to ensure that underprivileged students were assisted to further their education.

He, therefore, urged the beneficiary students, who received between 200 and 1,000 Ghana Cedis, based on their level of education, to take advantage of the offer and study hard, and come back to serve the district after completing their studies.

According to the DCE, “the free Senior High School (SHS) policy would definitely take off in September this year, to enable every child of school-going age to attend SHS.”

He appealed to parents and guardians of the beneficiary students to rally behind the government to enable it to solve education-related problems.

He said the funds to support the conduct of Supper MOCK was to help students to get better grades from the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE), beginning on June 15.

The DCE appealed to the Education Directorate to impress upon teachers to do their best to ensure that schools did not score zero per cent in the up-coming BECE.

He also promised that the Assembly would make frantic efforts to provide accommodation for teachers, to encourage them to accept postings to the district and improve education there.
