Gomoa Enyeme (C/R), Sept. 26, GNA – The District Chief Executive for Gomoa West, Mr Theophilus Aidoo-Mensah has appealed to non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and philanthropists to assist the government in putting in place facilities for the delivery of quality education.
Mr Aidoo-Mensah said determined as the government was, it would need some support as it could not do everything alone.
He made the appeal when St Martin De Porres Foundation, a Kumasi-based NGO donated stationery and footballs to Gomoa Enyeme SDA School at Enyeme.
The donation coincided with the inauguration of a Junior High School block for the town.
Mr Martin De Porres Maaseg, the Executive Director of the Foundation who made the donation, said the NGO decided to make the donation in view of the school’s poor performance in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
The school was one of the eight schools in Gomoa West which scored zero per cent in the examination, meaning none of the final year students in the eight schools qualified for admission to Senior High School.
Mr Aidoo-Mensah was not happy with the BECE results and said it was unfortunate that despite the heavy investment government was making in education, children continued to fail in examinations.
He exhorted parents to play their supervisory roles over their children effectively and must ensure that children got materials to study with at home.
“Please do not allow government’s investment in education to go down the drain,” the DCE stressed.
Mr Aidoo-Mensah pledged to construct a number of teachers’ quarters for the town, electrify the classrooms and also to provide furniture for the staff common room and the library.
Mr Walters Andoh, Headmaster, had appealed for computers to enhance the study of Information Communication Technology (ICT), library books for the school’s library, furniture for the library and staff common room and teachers’ quarters to enable the teachers to stay in the town.
Mr Welch Brew Mensah, Central Regional Manager for SDA Education Unit appealed to the community to help the school to perform efficiently.
Nana Mbir Frimpong VIII, Chief of the town appealed to the Assembly to provide the school and the town with polytanks for storing water.
Earlier, the DCE had inaugurated a day-care centre at Gomoa Kumasi.
