Government Urged to make Textbooks Available in Schools

Bolgatanga, July 26, GNA - A British Volunteer Service personnel attached to the Bolgatanga Municipal Directorate of Education, Mr. Arnold Vos, on Monday urged the Government to be pro-active in the supply of the requisite textbooks to raise the standard of education in the Northern part of the country. He made the call at a get-together held for him and his wife, Mariam also British Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO) personnel attached to the Bolgatanga Municipal Education Office, prior to their departure at the end of a one-year duty-tour.

Mrs Marian Vos was the Circuit Supervisors' Support Officer, while Mr. Arnold Vos was the Education Advisor.

He said their brief working tour in Ghana had given them the chance to know the challenges facing basic education in Ghana.

In a farewell speech, Mr. Anthony Aziabah, Bolgatanga Municipal Director of Education praised the couple for bringing great changes to the Directorate, especially in capacity building for Senior Staff, sponsoring of the monthly Senior Management meetings and the Circuit Supervisors in their work.

Mr. Aziabah said within the one-year they worked in the Municipal Directorate, 54 primary schools have been inspected and comprehensive reports written on them.

He noted that a Performance Monitoring Test had been organised for all primary six pupils in the Municipality, which was sponsored by LINK Community Development, an international NGO.

Mr. Aziabah commended the Voses for spearheading the Municipal Education Forum dubbed, 'Educom,' which brought together all stakeholders to brainstorm on challenges of education in the Municipality.

Mr. Ebrahim Farista, International Programme Director for LINK Community Development, who flew in from South Africa said the couple had set a very high standard in education and wished them success in their lives.

Mr. Farista said LINK's connection in education was yielding fruits in Uganda, South Africa, Ghana and other parts of the world and called for closer working relationship to prevail.
