Debiso (W/R), Sept.1 - GNA-Nana Aforo Kwaw II, Chief of Debiso, a major cocoa growing area in the Western Region has commended the government for fulfilling most of its election promises to bring improvement in the lives of the people.

He said the provision of development infrastructure such as schools, health, roads, coupled with the introduction of programmes to enhance human resource development were ample testimony of this assertion. Nana Aforo Kwaw was speaking at a grand durbar organised by the chiefs and people of Debiso in the Bia district in honour of Mr. Anthony Evans Amoah, the new Western Regional Minister on Wednesday.

The Minister was in the area as part of his four-day familiarisation tour of the Juaboso, Bia and Sefwi-Wiaso districts.

The chief of Debiso, who presided over the function said, "about 90 per cent of the electoral promises of the NPP had been fulfilled", he however added that there is more to be done to make life enjoyable to the people particularly this in the rural areas.

Nana Aforo Kwaw, who was onetime the winner of national best farmer award expressed the people's gratitude to the government for introducing the schools capital grant, the school-feeding programme to improve education and also credit facilities to enhance the agricultural sector. He appealed to the government to extend the on-going rehabilitation of the Tano-Benchima barrier road project to Oseikojokrom on the border with Cote de'Ivoire.

Nana Aforo Kwaw also appealed for the extension of the national electricity grid to some communities in the area including Kaase, Ahimakrom, Kwamebikrom, Fosukrom Adabokrom, and Kwame-Tawiakrom. The chief spoke about increasing incidents of armed robbery and other crimes in the area and urged the government and the Police Administration to provide vehicles and other logistics to enable the police to deal more effectively with the situation.

Mr. Amoah told the people that his administration would give priority attention to the area's development because the Bia district, being one of the newly created districts and considered to be a deprived area, is confronted with many challenges.

Mr. Amoah said under the self-help electrification programme (SHEP IV) seven communities in the area including Kumkumso, Yawmatwa, Asuopiri, Adabokrom, Kaase, Kwamebikrom, and Fosukrom would be connected to the national electricity grid by 2008.

These communities would be required to procure low-tension poles for the project, he said.

The Bia Secondary Technical School as well as the Debiso-Yawmatwa-Nkrankwanta road would be upgraded and rehabilitated. Mr. Amoah emphasised that the government was doing everything in its power to reduce poverty and improve the lives of the people, all that it needs is the cooperation, unity and peace among them for effective implementation of laudable policies and programmes.

On the upcoming district level elections, the Regional Minister advised the electorate to give their mandate to those who have the genuine desire to serve the people to enhance their developmental efforts. Accompanied by the Deputy Regional Minister, Mr. Kwasi Blay; the Regional Coordinating Director, Mr David Yaro; and the District Chief Executive, Mr. Benjamin Armah, Mr. Amoah visited the Oseikojokrom border station and interacted with personnel of the security agencies and workers at the station.

Mr. Archibald Opare-Addo, the Base Commander appealed to the Regional Coordination Council and other relevant institutions to support the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service bid to acquire land to build staff quarters for personnel of the service.

He said staff accommodation had been a teething problem for personnel including workers of other departments including Health, Immigration and Internal Revenue Service.

Mr. Amoah advised personnel at the station to continue to work hard for the benefit of the entire country.

Mr. Armah said the district assembly had been supporting security agencies to organise patrols to check increasing criminal activities in the district.

The Regional Minister and his entourage had earlier inspected on-going road, school, health and other development projects in the Sefwi-Wiaso and Juaboso districts and interacted with government workers, assembly members and chiefs.
