Bolgatanga, June 25, GNA - Government will commit resources to support 13,000 farmers, in the Upper East Region, to do dry season farming and livestock production during the next farming season, which begins in October.
The Executive would also assist the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to aid flood-prone areas in the Northern, Upper East and Upper West regions to determine suitable sites for irrigation facilities. Mr Mark Woyongo, Upper East Regional Minister who made this known in Bolgatanga on Thursday said under the Government Plantation Development Programme, 27,000 jobs would be created for disaster volunteer groups in the Region. Mr Woyongo was speaking at a maiden meeting of the Regional Platform Committee for Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), which was inaugurated last year.
The DRR made up of a 13- member committee and Chaired by the Paramount Chief of Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Aleemyaroom is to strategise to assist NADMO to address pertinent disaster management challenges confronting the Region. Mr Woyongo appealed to NADMO and DRR officials to work hard to update their knowledge in disaster management to reduce the challenges of bush fires, conflicts, floods, droughts, diseases and poverty.
