Ho, Aug. 1, GNA- Mr Samuel Gyang, Volta Regional Director of Education, on Saturday reiterated government's commitment to providing good quality education towards national development.
He said, consequently, government had decided to pay all school fees and levies for pupils in basic schools throughout the country. Mr Gyang said these in a speech read for him at the 25th anniversary celebration of Mawuli Primary and Junior Secondary schools (JSS) at Ho, which was under the theme: "Quality basic education, cornerstone for national development".
He said the Ministry of Education and Sports would complement government's efforts by providing the schools with all relevant textbooks and strengthening the inspectorate division of the ministry to enhance supervision and monitoring towards the realization of the objectives of the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education.
He said the time had come for all stakeholders and well meaning Ghanaians to complement government's effort, especially at the grassroots to promote basic education.
Mr Joseph Kwaku Nayan, Deputy Volta Regional Minister, said good quality basic education formed the foundation for development adding :"Quality basic education leads to great self-improvement which also leads to community and national development".
Mr Sitsofo Dumoga, national president of the Old Students Association of the School, said the only panacea to achieving the country's development agenda was the provision of good quality education for the citizens.
He, however, said that due to the sharp increase in number of schools in the country, government had become over burdened with problems.
Mr Dumoga, therefore, urged all Ghanaians to consider education as part of their responsibilities and contribute to the development of the sector.
Mr Frank Denakpor, Headmaster of Mawuli Junior Secondary School (JSS), called on individuals and organizations to assist the school build more classrooms, toilet facilities and to construct a fence wall around the school.
The Reverend J.L.K. Mesiotse, Acting General Manager of Evangelical Presbyterian (EP) Educational Unit, commended the authorities of Mawuli JSS, for being instrumental in the establishment of Mawuli primary school.
He noted that within 25 years of its existence, Mawuli JSS had turned out large number of great personalities who were playing crucial roles in the socio-economic development of the country. Sixty-one pupils were awarded for excelling in their examinations and a sod was cut for the commencement of a 100-seater computer laboratory for the school.
