The Greater Accra Regional Police Command on Tuesday detailed policemen to beef up security at the doctors’ flats of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
A policeman has been attached to each of the two flats in addition to the hospital’s security to ensure that doctors and other hospital residents enjoyed the needed security they deserve.
This was in response to the death of 27-year-old Junior Doctor Desmond Kabbah, who was found dead in his room on Sunday with some parts of his body peeled off and blood oozing from his nostrils.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency after the meeting between hospital‘s management and the Police Command on Tuesday at the hospital, Mr Mustapha Salifu, Public Relations Officer of the hospital, said the presence of the police in addition to the hospital's security would calm nerves and give some hope to the rest of the junior doctors.
He commended the police for the swift response to helping to find the solution to the matter and said the hospital would assist the police to find the cause of death of the young doctor.
Mr Salifu explained that the hospital had started erecting street lights at vantages places to give visibility to the area saying “the work which started two weeks ago, will be hastened to cover every corner of the hospital".
Responding to the 24 hour ultimatum given to the hospital by the Junior Doctors to assure them of their security, Mr Salifu said it would be out of place to give that ultimatum because the work had already begun and they should rather be working together to address the concerns currently before them.
The Police, led by Greater Accra Regional Commander, DCOP Atimbila, included Dansoman District Commander, Korle-Bu District Commander and Director of Homicide Unit of Ghana Police Service.
The deceased was found in his room at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital’s Doctors flats at dawn on May 28, by friends. Preliminary investigations revealed that he had stabbed wounds on his body at the time he was found with some skin from his leg peeled off and his bed soaked with blood.
Dr Vincent Ganu, President of House Officers at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, presented a petition to management about the recent death of their colleague indicating that management of the hospital had failed to execute its promise of providing them with the needed security and asked for adequate security within the next 24 hours.
He noted that their current security could not be guaranteed since the hospital management had not given them any concrete assurance of their safety.
The Greater Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Freeman Tetteh, said the police was investigating while waiting for the results of the autopsy to determine whether it was murder or otherwise.
“So far no arrests have been made. We have intensified security at the hospital,” he added.**
