In a communal drive to play a civic role in keeping their environments and surroundings clean, a group in the Ayawaso North constituency, the Environmental Volunteers, have taken it upon themselves to conduct clean up exercises in the area.
Under their area of operation is the Kanda, 441, Nima and Mamobi areas, largely seen as areas that produce a lot of uncollected refuse even though they are densely populated.
According to organizer of the group, Cyril Yussif, their effort is to "deepen education of sanitation by openly engaging in acts that show that it is a collective duty and everyone must be involved."
On his part, coordinator of Environmental volunteers, Mohammed Alabi; expressed his satisfaction with the group's work and promised that as they got more support especially from the locals, they would extend their activities to Newtown and Alajo areas, because sanitation was something that affected everyone.
The Government has instituted the National Sanitation Day through the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, during which time citizens are expected to take part in cleaning the environment
